“Positioning Wexford for the Upturn” was the key message from the economic strategy by Julie O’Neill which was officially launched by the Chairman of Wexford County Council Cllr. Jim Moore at Wexford Opera House, Thursday 6th May 2010.

The Chairman Cllr. Jim Moore outlined that we are facing unprecedented economic challenges and that the County must be well positioned to take full advantage of the opportunities that will be presented, with the upturn which is now being anticipated.  Following on from the recent Economic forum, Wexford County Council commissioned Julie O’Neill – a Wexford native and former secretary general in the Department of Transport to devise a blueprint to harness Wexford‘s strengths and opportunities for sustainable growth and development.

Julie O’Neill outlined the key findings of the report which in these challenging times require the sustained efforts of all agencies and business stakeholders to work together.

The strategy sets out a vision that is Green – Smart – Sustainable and is based on five key pillars for the County:
o Upping our Tourism Game
o Attracting Inward Investment in Financial Services
o Stimulating innovation and indigenous enterprises in Health Life Sciences
o Developing a “ Green Banner” for Wexford Food
o Re-orienting the construction sector

Julie stated that the initiative, capacity for innovation and willingness for collective action in Wexford is there to be harnessed.  The challenge is not to come up with good ideas but to find the right mechanisms to put good ideas into action.
